So, What Does It Mean to Be a Disciple?
The word “disciple” comes from the Greek word mathētēs, which simply means “learner” or “student.” But in the context of Jesus’ ministry, being a disciple was much more than sitting in a classroom or taking notes. It meant fully committing your life to follow Him, to learn from Him, and to become more like Him.
Let’s start with Luke 9:23, where Jesus lays out the heart of discipleship:
"Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me."
This verse gives us three clear markers of a disciple:
1. Deny Yourself
Being a disciple isn’t about living for your own desires or agenda. It’s about surrendering your will to God and letting Him direct your life. This can feel countercultural in a world that tells us to “follow your heart,” but discipleship calls us to follow Christ above all else.
2. Take Up Your Cross Daily
In Jesus’ time, the cross symbolized suffering, sacrifice, and even death. As disciples, we’re called to lay down our comfort and selfish ambitions to live for God’s kingdom. It’s not always easy, but the daily practice of carrying our “cross” reminds us of our dependence on Christ.
3. Follow Me
Discipleship isn’t just about what you leave behind—it’s about who you’re following. Following Jesus means studying His teachings, modeling His character, and walking in step with Him every day.
Practical Application
So how does this look in your daily life? Here are a few ways to live as a disciple:
Spend Time in God’s Word
A disciple learns from their Teacher, and for us, that means soaking in Scripture regularly. Start with the Gospels to see how Jesus lived and taught.
Prioritize Prayer
A disciple stays connected to Jesus through prayer. This isn’t just asking for things—it’s listening, worshiping, and growing in your relationship with Him.
Be Part of a Community
Discipleship happens in relationship. Surround yourself with other believers who can encourage, challenge, and walk with you on this journey.
Live Out Your Faith
Discipleship isn’t just about learning—it’s about doing. Look for ways to serve others, share the gospel, and reflect Christ in your actions.
Encouragement
Here’s the good news: you don’t have to be perfect to be a disciple. Look at Peter—he doubted, denied Jesus, and often didn’t understand what Jesus was saying. But Jesus still called him, loved him, and used him to build the church. Discipleship is about progress, not perfection. It’s about saying “yes” to Jesus every day, even in the small things.
Closing Thoughts
So, as you go about your week, ask yourself: What step can I take today to follow Jesus more closely? Maybe it’s spending time in the Word, reaching out to someone in need, or surrendering an area of your life to Him. Whatever it is, take that step and trust that God will guide you as you grow.
